Mood and Emotion- Evaluation

For the last 16 weeks at college we have been doing our final major projects, there has been many ups and downs,  a lot of stressful  moments but also many moments where I have been proud of my work and what I have produced.

We were able to write our own theme and brief and base it on whatever we liked, at first tis seemed like a big ask as it was so broad but after I had come up with a theme, I was eager to get started. My theme was mood and emotion, it intrigues me how mood and emotion is involved in everybody’s life, every minutes of every day, I wanted to see how different things can provoke different emotions, for example music, the weather and most importantly colour. I wanted to link my theme of mood and emotion with colour theory, as I thought it was an ideal lie with me doing  an art and design course and as I am wanting to do interior design as a career I also thought this would be great to research into.

So at the beginning of this project I did around two weeks’ worth of research, for my secondary research, I mostly got it from the internet, I found artists that I like and ideas that  could research into, for example the weather and music. I made a list of all the websites I used and put these in my bibliography.

I looked at quite a lot of artists during this project, but the artists who I would say influenced me the most were Mark Rothko and Picasso. Mark Rothko is an artist who works with both colour and mood and emotion, so this was a perfect artist for me, he drew landscapes in their primary forms of horizontal stripes, and he painted the pictures in different shades of colours, depending what mood he was in.

Picasso is obviously an infamous artist, but I didn’t study into all of his works, researched into a particular period. His blue period, this was because at this point in his life he was depressed at the death of one of his friends, and this effected his work by making his paintings very dull, all with a shade of blue in them, also the people In the paintings were more often than not depressed. I used Picasso as I thought he was a great example to show how different moods and emotions can affect your art work.

I would say I did a lot of primary research. My main source of primary research came from a questionnaire that I created to give to people. It was three simple questions, what colour reminds you of which mood (happy, sad and angry) and what object/ picture reminds you of this mood. From the results I got I developed them onto my visual sheets and tuned them into patterns for my final pieces.

I also went to Darton College for a day and took photos of the dancers, this is because I wanted to show how different things can portray mood and emotion, I took quick sketches of the dancers too which can also class as observational drawing.

Another thing I did as primary research was giving my classmates ten minutes to listen to different genres of music to see how it made them feel. I then asked them to draw patterns and pictures of how the music made them feel.

I would say I did well with my primary research as I got a lot of varied ways to collect research.

I did around 30 samples on this project, which although this doesn’t seem that much I believe I did a very varied selection, as not one of my samples were the same. I used many different processes including puffbinder, devore and pigment prints.  I even extended a least half of my sample by sewing into them, and quilting them. It took me around two weeks to do all my samples.

I have made three different screens to go on my samples and final pieces. One of them was of some music notes; this was because I studied how music can change your emotion.

My second screen was of flowers; this was because a lot of people said that flowers made them feel happy from my primary research, and so throughout the project I have developed this into a pattern.

My third screen was of some feathers; this also came from m primary research and I developed it throughout my project.

For my final piece I created three, 1 metre square hangings. Each one represents a different mood although they all have very similar prints on them. I took me around three days to create them. The moods they represent are happy, sad and angry.

Sad

My sad final piece if on azeta (devrore cotton). I have printed my feather design onto this piece with devore paste. I then dip dyed it with Green MX2B. after this I then printed my feathers again over my devore in grey pigment print.

Happy

This final piece is printed on cotton. I have tie dyed my fabric. On this piece I have printed my flower design in blue and red. Over the top I then printed y feather design in puffbinder. I have also sewn extra details into my flowers in different coloured thread.

Angry

This piece is also on cotton.  For the background of this piece I have scribbled on it with fabric pens as you would if you were angry. On this piece I have printed half of it with music notes and half of it with feathers. To add effect I have also shredded parts of my final piece to make it look more ‘angry’.

Throughout this project I haven’t really had any major changes for this project. The only real change that I can think of is that in an ideal world I would have loved to have different screen prints for each final piece, but unfortunately, due to my time management, I wasn’t able to do this, and ended up putting the same screen prints on all three different pieces.

My time management hasn’t been very good for this project, I have never missed any days of college and always done work whilst been at college but I would say I haven’t done enough work whilst I have been at home until probably too late and made it a rush for myself to get this project finished. If I was to do this project again my time management would definitely be one of the things I would change.

I would say my final piece went very well, I am very proud of my outcome as I believe you can see the amount of work and effort I have out into it.

One thing that I am not very happy with is my journal, I feel I could have spent more time on it, making it more detailed.

Overall I have really enjoyed this project, I would say I have learnt a lot in the process too, which is great. I would definitely do this project again, changing some things along the way, most importantly my time management. I hope that all my outcomes reflect all the effort and work I have put into it.

Mood and Emotion- Week 16

Has been our final week on our final major project, it has been a very stressful week, making sure we have got everything done for the deadline at 4:30pm on 24th May 2013. This week I have finished my third and final, final piece, I have finished m professional practise folder, and I have finished my sketchbook. Everything else was up to date and because of this I wasn’t in that much of a rush.

Week 15- Mood and Emotion

This week I have made my two of my final pieces, it took quite a while but I am quite proud and happy with the outcome. Also this week have been trying to catch up on other things, for example I have drawn up another final design sheet to show what my final pieces look like. I have even nearly finished my professional practise folder.

Mood and Emotion- week 14

All this week I have been working on my samples, I have used a variation of different materials including cotton, azeta and muslin. I have tried dying them all in different ways and I have even extended a few of them by sewing into them, this week I also did some weaving and felting which I am later going to print on.

Mood and Emotion- week 13

This week I have mostly been working in my sketchbook whilst I have been waiting for my screens to be made. My screens were all made on Friday so next week I am going to start on my samples in the workshop.

Mood and Emotion- week 12

This week I feel I have achieved a lot, I finished both of my final design sheets, and also drew up and handed in two of my tracings, I even started my third tracing. Also this week I have been on a trip to Darton College to take photographs and draw some of the dancers to show how different genres of dance can portray different mood and emotions, for example ballet is more sombre and maybe even sad, whereas modern and jazz can be more energetic and make you feel a lot happier. I took a lot of pictures and will be sticking them all in my sketchbook for proof.

mood and emotion- week 11

This week I feel that I have done quite a lot of work, I have made sure that I have worked on my project every day. I have finished two design development sheets and started on my first final design sheet, I am happy to have started these final design sheets, because I am using the patterns on these sheets as my screen print, so once I have finished these sheets I can hand my screen print in to be put on a screen and then I can start with my samples.

mood and emotion- week 10

We have been back at college this week; it has been our tenth week which is very scary to think about. On Monday we had a group assessment where we showed our peers our work, it made me realise that I probably don’t have ten weeks of work, and so I am going to make sure that I am working on my project everyday now to get the best grades possible. Also this week I have done some work in my sketchbook and started my second design development sheet.

mood and emotion- week 9

This week has been our ninth week on our final major project, it has been our second week of our holidays too so I have just been doing work in my sketchbook and working on samples on the sewing machine.

mood and emotion- week 8

This has been the 8th week on our final major project, it has also been the first week of our holidays, but nevertheless I have still been doing work, this week I have done quite a lot of sketchbook work, I also caught up on my journal. I did some work in my professional practise folder too!

mood and emotion- week 7

This week has been our 7th week; I can’t believe we are already over half way through our project.  This week has been the holidays, I have got another 2 sheets done, I also did some work in my sketchbook, I have even done a few samples on my sewing machine.

mood and emotion- week 6

We have had our sixth week on the project now, and this week I have been doing more sheet work. I have finished my research sheet of and done an artist research sheet. Also this week we had a full day of doing our professional practice folders, which is another unit we need to cover on this course, our teacher felt we were getting a little behind on this unit so let us have a day to do just this. It was really useful and I got caught up.

mood and emotion- week 5

This has been our fifth week on our final major project, and I must say, the weeks are going by much faster than I thought they would. This week I have started on my sheet work, I have managed to finish one research sheet and start a second one.

Week 4 - questionaire

This is my questionaire that i have made.

mood and emotion- week 4

This week was our fourth week. On Wednesday I had a university interview at the University of Huddersfield, it went very well and I’m please to say that I got a conditional offer. Also this week I have made my questionnaire that I am going to be giving out to people for my primary research. It is a simple questionnaire asking people what colour and object they think represents what mood.

mood and emotion- week 3

This is our third week on this project, and this week I have been on a college trip to London, we went for 2 days, so whilst I was here I tried to gather as much primary research as possible. Also I have finished writing my proposal, I found it quite difficult to write as I had never done anything like this before, but after some guidance and a little patience I got through it and my proposal is now being sent to the examiners to be checked.

mood and emotion- week 2

This is the second week in our project but it is also half term, as I haven’t even written my proposal yet I can’t really do that much but I have started to do a bit of work in sketchbook and just try and gather some ideas for what I could do in my project.

mood and emotion- week 1

So this is my first week on my project and I am very excited about the forthcoming weeks I have on this project. But this week we have been writing our first drafts for our proposals for the briefs for our projects. We have really just been researching into what we want to do, jotting down ideas and making notes so that by the end of the 3rd week we have written our proposals.

FINAL MAJOR PROJECT- MOOD AND EMOTION

We are now onto our final major project, for this we get to write our own brief and create whatever we like at the end of it. For my project I am going to research into mood and emotion, our mood an emotions come into everything we do in life including our art, so I am researching how art can be inspired by our mood and emotions, I am also linking this with colour theory, what colour represents happiness or sadness? These are just a couple of the questions I will be asking throughout this project.

I want to create a questionnaire for people to fill in, this will be my primary research I will take my findings from the questionnaire and develop them into patterns to hopefully go on my final piece

For my final piece I would love to create 3, 1 metre long hangings, each one representing a different mood and emotion.

I will write on my blog every week to keep you all up to date with how my project is going.

Evaluation- Live Brief

For the last 8 weeks we have been doing a ‘live brief’ at college. We were given two choices of customers we could work for, a fashion brief or an interior design brief. I chose the interior design brief, the reason I did this was because I would love to be an interior in the future as my career and so I thought this would be a great way to have a taste of what  will be doing for the rest of my life.
For this project I don’t think I did as much research I could have possibly done, I was going to go to an exhibition which had Charles Rennie Mackintosh’s work in it but unfortunately it was closed for renovation. This would have been my primary research, I also tried to ask for a trip to the house that we were decorating for but unfortunately this never happened either. Because I didn’t do any primary research I made sure that I got my secondary research from different sources which included books and internet.
After I had researched into all of the artist that I liked, I took certain pieces of their worked which I really admired and tried making that into my own patterns. For example I tried to take the geometric patterns of Charles Rennie Mackintosh’s work and the large swirly patterns of William Morris. I put all of these patterns onto two visual sheets which I made. After this I started to come up with my final design.
At the beginning of this project our client told us not to use blue in our designs, this is because the colour blue fades easily, so whilst we were doing our samples, we tried our best to stay away from the colour blue. Also at the beginning of the project we were going to be designing fabrics for two different seats and we could design two different patterns for each one of the seats, but later in the project we got told that we would only be creating the fabric for one seat so we didn’t have to create two designs anymore. Apart from this I wouldn’t say that our client asked me to change or develop my design at all, and every time she came in to see us she always said how much she liked my work.

As I have already said, our client asked up to not work with blue, I did my best not to use this colour, although I had some trouble creating the colour that I wanted to use, as I wanted to mix a grey yet every time the fabric dried it came out blue, to solve this I change the colour scheme and created a green/ gold colour. Our customer also told us that the fabric we would be using need to pass a rub test to be able to be used as a chair and because of this our fabrics would need be very thick material.
In the workshop I would say I did quite a lot of experimenting, I did around 30 samples where I changed my material, colours and techniques of printing. The fabrics I used were, cotton, cotton velvet and satin. I dyed these samples with a variety of different procien dyes, and then printed on them with pigment inks that I made myself, puff binder and devore paste.

The biggest problem I encountered was my kodatrace. Whilst I was painting my design onto it, it was fine, but after a short period of time the paint started peeling off, I tried repainting it around 3 times but the same result just kept happening, to fix this problem we stopped using the paint and instead used pens that worked just as well.
I also would also say I encountered a problem with my time management, as during this project I have had a 2 week holiday, before I went I knew that I would be missing valuable time in the print room and so before I went I made that I was in front with all my work, I had finished all my sheet work and even drawn out my final design so that when I got back I could get straight on with drawing it onto kodatrace and get into the print room.

If we had no constraints from our client I do believe that I would have done things differently, for example, my favourite sample was on devore velvet, and we would have been able to use this material as it wasn’t strong enough.

At the beginning of the project we got told to research into the arts and craft movement and artist called Charles Rennie Mackintosh, I did this and also researched into an artist called William Morris too. I would say overall these two artists have influenced my work a significant amount, even up to my final design I have aspects of their work in my design.

I decided on my final design quite easily as I already had an idea of what I wanted to do for it. I knew that I wanted to have a geometric edge to my work as this is what Rennie Mackintosh did in al lot of his work, I also really appreciated the large flower prints that William Morris is famous for and so I drew a large flower on my design in the style of Morris. It took me around a week to come up with my final design but when it was finished I was quite proud of it.
I would say that my final design could be reproduced but I think it would be a long and complicated process as I have 5 different screens to make my work so it would take a long time and a lot of patience to reproduce my work on a large scale.

Our customer was a wealthy man who lived in a large country house, he also really liked the arts and craft era. With this in mind I would defiantly say that my customer influenced my work, as I knew that he would want something a little bit special, a one off design and I knew that he would be able to recognise the artist’s work that I included in my design so I only picked my favourite parts to put in it to try and please the customer.
I would say a few things in this project went well, I really liked all my sheet work, I put a lot of effort into them and I think you could tell that from the standard of them, I had a lot of enthusiasm for this project as I would love to be an interior designer and because of this I had the right frame of mind and things were going well for me.

A few things definitely went wrong for me as well. the main problem being my time management, although the first few weeks went really well and I had got a lot of work done, with me taking two weeks off, I think I got behind and so didn’t get my work to a high enough standard. Also when I got back from my holiday I encountered a problem when painting onto the kodatrace which I have already discussed, and as I hadn’t planned time for this problem, this set me back too.

If I could redo this project I wouldn’t have had the two weeks off. As if it wasn’t for these two weeks I know that I would have got a lot more work produced than I actually did.
Although my time management was bad from my holiday I would say that I did manage my time well and effectively, for example, in the first few weeks that we were doing this project I had made sure that I in front, as I had finished all my sheet work and even drawn out my final design, and although I encountered problems when I got back to college I made sure that I came in on my days off to catch up and in the end I managed to get all my work completed.

I deffinatley used my diary effectively, I have found it very useful and have found that it has made me do work, as everytime I have done something on my project I have wrote it in my diary, I can see how much work I do and when I haven’t been doing much work. It has helped me keep up to date with what I have, and haven’t done and overall it has kept me very organised. I would definitely consider using a diary for our next project so that I can keep up with all my work I am doing.
Unfortunately I don’t think I have used my blog as effectively as I could have done, although I have been posting things on here, I haven’t kept as ‘up-to-date’ with it as I could have. For my next project I am going to make sure that this is a task that is just as important as all my other things to do in my project and hopefully will keep up-to-date with it.

I have really enjoyed working with a client outside of college; I feel it has given us a great opportunity that not many students get. As I want to be an interior designer I also feel this has given me an experience that other people who want to do the same won’t have, it have given me a taste of what I want to do for the rest of my life. When our client was giving us feedback I really made sure that I took note and listened as she is working in the industry that I want to work in, and if anyone knows what your work has to be like and what the customers want, it will be her. I would love to have this experience again and I have really enjoyed the last 8 weeks in this project.
Overall I would say that this project has gone well, I have enjoyed having this opportunity and this project in general. I have had some stressful times, when things haven’t been going very well, but I have always used my initiative to overcome them. I would say in this project I have built a new confidence in the print room, mixing my own dyes and not asking for as much help. Although I didn’t win the competition at the end of this project, I was up against strong competition, and I am proud of my work  as I feel I have worked to the best of my ability throughout the project.

My Screen Print Design

This is the design of my screen print
It is in the style of Charles Rennie Mackintosh
I have took all the ideas on my design from my visual sheets and mood board
I have put my own theme on it and added music notes on it.
I will add photos of the kodatrace that i used to put my design on later.

Sheet Work- Visual Sheets

Aswell as my mood board, i also did two visual sheets
I did them both in the same sort of style so that they would marry together
I got my ideas from my sheet from my mood board
The artists that inflhenced these sheets were Charles Rennie Mackintosh, Margeret Mackintosh and William Morris
I hope you like them
Next on this project i will be doing my screen print design in the style of Mackintosh

Sheet Work- moodboard

So for the first few weeks of this project i have being doing my sheet work. We got told to research into Charles Rennie Mackintosh for our project so after i did this i started on my moodboard
One of Mackintosh's influences was the industrial revaloution so on my moodboard i drew a large chimney to represent this
I also drew and painted some of his famous rose patterns. I researched into william morris too.
I also tried to add my own ideas to the sheet, i did this by drawing music notes and dancers on it, i did this as our customer that we are designing for is a theatre director and so i thought i could make my design more personal by adding these pictures to my sheet. I hope you like my sheet
